Personally, it was only a matter of time before I decided to back off from SNSs in China (WeChat Moments and Sina Weibo, for example). Not only do false information and relentless advertising elicit repugnance, but the enclosed cyberspace has caused me great discomfort —— claustrophobia triggered by the GFW and the authorities’ mentality behind the wall. Over and above the notorious censorship, they are trying to divert public attention from political and economic imbroglios to celebrity gossip and nonsensical trifles. In the Information Age, nothing could be worse than this. Most Chinese people have been deprived of the latitude in knowing what they want and need to know, and all they can obtain without special means is tailored content that aims at anesthetizing their minds. It’s purely ridiculous, malicious, and unfair.
